Sewing the Tiffany Jumpsuit by Mimi G Style in African Wax Print Fabric by Dovetailed

Adelle (aka @montanastrange) has sewn the Tiffany Jumpsuit by Mimi G Style in this intricate "Fashionably Late" African print fabric from Dovetailed London. Want to read on, get a cup of your favourite drink and enjoy!

First of all, I am so delighted that I was able to choose from some amazing prints from Dovetailed London! I was so happy to stare at this zig zag print while working with it, this is my first time working with this type of design.

When I saw this I knew I wanted to make a loose fitting jumpsuit to really showcase the print and colours. I also didn't want to cut into it too much so this Tiffany Jumpsuit pattern by Mimi G Style was the perfect fit, this pattern has six pieces altogether. This is my fourth version of this jumpsuit. I'm at ease with making this and it’s so comfortable to wear.

I could have sized down this pattern but I like the extra room so I would be able to layer this and wear extra thick jumpers and hoodies underneath it. This is why I opted to tie straps instead of sewing both ends into the jumpsuit, it allows more freedom for me to adjust the fit according to whatever else I’m wearing. I think the ties bring an extra design feature to it that isn’t over the top, this fabric speaks for itself.

The trickiest part for me was figuring out how to pattern match this and making sure the placement wasn’t too suggestive! I think I did a decent job of that looking back at the photos.

This cotton fabric is always a pleasure to work with, I have made several garments with a similar texture to this one and I must say, I have no complaints at all. These fabrics are great for beginners, breathable on warm days and easy to layer on colder days.

The lining and pockets are made using another print of African fabric for that “clashing patterns” look. I like how big and loud this print is and it’ll go well with muted/black tops I own. I also like that this goes well with most of my footwear. I am wearing this with my Buffalo shoes, I have worn them with crocs on a dry sunny day too and of course my Doc Martens on any given day!

At a later date I could insert elastic in the hems to make them cuffed for more of a balloon/clown-like effect on the legs. Another design feature I was pondering was adding a trim, in a colour matching one of the colours in the print, to the front centre seam. Being a sewist means having loads of ideas but this is me just thinking out loud, in all honesty I am super delighted with how this turned out!

To get this opportunity to have Dovetailed London fabric has been great and I love seeing what others make!

Happy crafting!
