Small Business, Big Impact: Why Your £5 Matters This Small Business Saturday
This week, I had the unique privilege of attending a breakfast meeting at 10 Downing Street, alongside fellow small business owners, business leaders, and key policymakers including the Prime Minister, Chancellor, and Business Secretary. As someone who is always found networking a challenge, I was initially apprehensive. But the energy in the room was contagious, and before I knew it, I was sharing the story of Dovetailed London—a brand born from a desire to celebrate bold African prints and sustainable fashion—and listening to the inspiring journeys of other founders.
The event highlighted the immense value small businesses bring to the UK. We’re not just selling products or services; we’re building communities, creating jobs, and driving local economies. It’s why initiatives like Small Business Saturday are so important.
What is Small Business Saturday?
Small Business Saturday is a grassroots campaign that originated in the United States in 2010 and has since been adopted in the UK. Held annually on the first Saturday of December, the initiative encourages consumers to shop small and support independent businesses. The goal is simple yet powerful: to shine a spotlight on small enterprises and demonstrate their vital role in our economy and communities.
The Economic Impact of Small Businesses
Did you know that small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) account for over 99% of all businesses in the UK? They provide around 16 million jobs and contribute significantly to the country’s GDP. Yet, despite their importance, small businesses often face challenges that larger corporations do not, such as limited access to funding, smaller marketing budgets, and competition from big-box retailers and online giants.
Small Business Saturday offers a counterbalance by urging consumers to make conscious decisions to support local shops, makers, and service providers. In 2022 alone, UK consumers spent an estimated £1 billion on Small Business Saturday. This year, we can aim even higher.
Why Spend £5?
It is easy to feel that one small purchase won’t make a difference, but consider this. Imagine if every adult in the UK spent just £5 at an independent business each week. With over 50 million adults in the country, that’s £250 million a week—or £13 billion a year—flowing directly into local economies. These funds could be used to hire staff, expand product lines, invest in technology, or refurbish shops. The knock-on effects include increased local employment, stronger community ties, and more vibrant high streets.
The Social Value of Shopping Small
Beyond the economic benefits, supporting small businesses fosters a sense of community and connection. When you shop small, you’re not just buying a product; you’re supporting someone’s dream. Independent business owners often go the extra mile to provide personalised service, unique offerings, and a welcoming atmosphere.
For example, at Dovetailed London, every garment tells a story. Our bold African prints and sustainable designs are crafted with care. We are a fashion brand on a mission to transform the way women shop by infusing their wardrobes with vibrant colour and encouraging mindful, long-term investments in their clothing. When you choose to buy from brands like ours, you’re investing in quality, creativity, and passion.
Small Businesses and Sustainability
Small businesses are often at the forefront of sustainable practices. Without the pressure of mass production, many independent brands can focus on ethical sourcing, eco-friendly packaging, and limited-run collections that reduce waste. By choosing to shop with these businesses, you’re also making a positive impact on the environment.
How You Can Get Involved
This Small Business Saturday, I urge you to take a moment to think about the businesses in your community. Here’s how you can make a difference:
-
Spend Locally: Visit a local shop, café, or market and make a purchase. Even small amounts add up.
-
Share the Love: Use social media to shout out your favourite small businesses. Tag them, leave reviews, and encourage your followers to support them too.
-
Gift Small: With the holiday season upon us, consider giving gifts from independent brands. It’s a meaningful way to show you care while supporting entrepreneurs.
-
Engage: Attend local events, craft fairs, and markets. Many small businesses showcase their work at these venues, and it’s a great way to discover unique products.
-
Advocate: Encourage friends and family to join you in supporting small businesses. Share stories about your favourite finds and the people behind them.
Looking Ahead
The success of Small Business Saturday doesn’t have to end when the day is over. Make shopping small a regular habit. Whether it’s a weekly coffee run to your local café or monthly visits to a nearby boutique, these actions build a culture of support for small enterprises.
My Commitment
As the founder of Dovetailed London, I’m committed to not only running my own business ethically and sustainably but also supporting fellow entrepreneurs. The stories I heard at 10 Downing Street this week reaffirmed my belief in the resilience, creativity, and passion of small business owners.
Let’s make this Small Business Saturday a moment to remember. Together, we can create lasting change—one £5 purchase at a time.
